That sounds like a good idea. I don't know how to make a bigger one or how to keep it together either.
[Kuramochi perks at the mention of counter space. While he doesn't mind cooking at home he did wonder how he was going to make it work. That's one last thing he has to think about now.]
Okay, we can go get the ingredients then bring it back to your place. Too bad we can't really taste it at least we can make it look good. Um, you ever made one before? I haven't made one in a while.
[It's good to talk about, while they take a walk to get the last ingredients they needed. He had a lot of the basics, but things like icing and decorations they'd need to pick up. Maybe some extra butter since it's a bigger project...]
Honestly, it's been a while. But I made them before with my sister. Well-- more like I made the house and she decorated it.
[They'd had their roles and he accepted it.]
I will say, however, I haven't had one fall apart on me yet.
I used to make gingerbread houses with my mom. I would decorate and my mom would bake it. My grandpa would eat the decorations then we had to go get some more.
[Kuramochi grinned a little at the memory. His grandpa would always sneak the decorations when he had his back turned.]
Me neither. This will be my first time making one so I hope it doesn't fall.
[Tachibana chuckles-- he can imagine. His mother might have done something like that.]
Being out of the country, our grandfather never got to join us-- however, my sister Makoto was always insisting we had to send him pictures before anyone could eat any of it.
[Family is nice.]
I've started cooking a lot more now that I'm here, but I tend to stick to simpler things unless it's a special occasion.
I'm glad he could still see it. Did he let you guys know when he got them? My mom would take a couple of pictures before my grandpa would eat the roof.
[Family is really nice. Kuramochi is pretty close to his mom and grandpa that he does love hearing stories about other families. It reminds him that he should do something with them when he goes home.]
I just started cooking a little more seriously lately. I don't know how to cook anything really fancy yet, but I want to learn more. What kind of meals do you make for a special occasion?
[Since he's become interested in cooking, he wants to learn more about the type of food they make.]
He did. He's always sending pictures and packages from Japan. Mostly for my mother's sake, but my sister gets really excited to see them now too.
[It's pretty cute. So he leaves that stuff to the ladies. But he does enjoy seeing the pictures of Tokyo.]
Actually, a lot of the recipes I have are Japanese thanks to my mother. Although there are a few from my grandmother on my father's side-- most of the Chinese dishes I make I've learned myself from shows and books back when I lived there.
If you'd like to try something different, I'd be more than happy to share some of them with you.
That's great! The packages sound nice too. I haven't been back to Japan since we took a trip when I was 13? Sometimes we get packages from our relatives back home since we can't really make it to a lot of things anymore.
[He really does want to go back with his family one day.]
Really? Thanks! I have a couple of my mom's cooking books and recipes I find online, but I haven't tried any Chinese dishes yet. Oh, you lived there? How was the food? I heard it's different than the take out we have here.
It's nice, since my sister's never been there. I was born there, but we moved back to China shortly after. I was too young to really remember much. But it's still nice to have that connection. My grandfather still lives in Tokyo so ideally I'd like to go visit him with Makoto in the near future.
[He'd like to see it for himself, but more than that he wants his mom to be able to see her family again and for his sister to be able to enjoy it.]
True, but I think that's the case with any home-made recipe competing with take out. It will certainly make you look differently at the kind you've been eating up until now.
Yeah one day I want to go back to Japan too. It would be nice to go back there to see it.
[For some reason it feels like his grandpa would be there too even if he's living here with him. He's not gonna focus too hard about it. He can leave some ingredients out for his grandpa to eat when he goes back home.]
I have been learning the difference between the foods I make between the foods I eat when I'm working. Now it makes me want to make more and to see what kind of different foods are out there. How many different foods have you tried?
Honestly, I haven't given it a lot of thought. But I've had an opportunity to taste a lot of different foods through different business meetings and such. I don't have nearly as much variety at home.
But you certainly seem passionate about it.
[It's kind of infectious in it's own way. It's always nice hearing people talk about things they love.]

Do you cook a lot?
