CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Tachibana Tetsu
AGE: 25
CANON: Yakuza 0

CANON HISTORY: here
CANON PERSONALITY: Growing up as the child of a war orphan was a scarring experience for Tetsu; one that honestly affected his whole life. Hated by the Chinese people around them due to the hostility created by the war, he lived in constant fear. He and his sister were both bullied and harassed mercilessly even if they tried to do something as simple as go to see a movie. In order to fight back against the cruelties forced upon him he felt obligated to become stronger. Even after fleeing China to seek out legitimate employment, he came to terms with the fact that neither country was willing to accept him. So he was forced to continue struggling to survive. In doing so he did become stronger, but in turn he also became naturally tangled not only in violence-- but criminal activity as well. "Bonds" for him were formed not of affection, but as connections. He sought to use individuals around him to their fullest potential and in turn made himself someone that could be usefully used by others in order to cement a growing place in the world.

Survival for him meant not only being able to fight his enemies off with his fists or his feet-- but being able to outsmart them. Before approaching someone, he'd have information on them and know what to expect. In turn that allowed him to guess their actions based on motivations, desires and character. But even though he scraped and clawed his way up from the bottom, he wasn't able to do that alone and in choosing his connections he had to make certain risks to reap the rewards that would come with it. He lost his arm protecting his best man. At any time he has a good grasp on what he is and isn't willing to risk and what his chances are. While he didn't come so far by playing it safe, if it had come down to a matter of his life or someone else's, he'd say that he couldn't offer his life up for them even if he might apologize for it. This all shifts along with his plans and forecasts. In a very cool, collected way he'd grown to strategize in his head nearly constantly with each step; each change-- always thinking at least four or five steps ahead and adjusting when necessary.

Although he was able to forge a life for himself, a part of him carried the burden of guilt for abandoning his mother and sister; despite the fact that he was aware how unrealistic it would have been to take them with him considering the danger and the nature of his unpleasant crawl to gain some small amount of status in the world. Yet upon learning that they came to Japan, seeing them on television, he immediately devoted every bit of time and resources he had into finding them. His mistakes, which he knows he's made plenty of, don't stop him from being hellbent on setting things right when it's important to him.

While he is very much aware of the shady nature of his network of connections; his professional charisma, aggressive tactics, and cleverness have made it a very solid web. Although at times mysterious and secretive about himself he tries to be straightforward where it counts. Regarding risks, he's blunt and straightforward with the people involved about them. It doesn't mean he won't seriously ask you to go into those situations-- but he will tell you what you're dealing with. All the same, if he's asking you to take on such a request, then it's because he genuinely believes that person or group of people is capable of doing it. He considers it his job to look for and try to draw upon individual's full potentials when he needs them.

That said, regarding his emotions, he tends to keep a tight lid on them. While he may speak a bit on what happened in a matter-of-fact way, he's not likely to let down his guard and show you just how much it affects him. For example-- even the death and ultimately the betrayal of his closest confidant wasn't something he let himself get emotional about-- even though it was his sister's life on the line. Getting emotional means looking weak, and that's something he can afford very little of. To maintain the structure and order he'd built, the idea was that he needed to always be that strong person-- stronger than anyone, capable of taking on the world.

Life has beat him down in many ways. Rather than people, he tends to put his beliefs in the things that make people tick-- their motivations, goals and outlooks. Vulnerability does not come easily to him, nor does he feel comfortable showing it. Even in the face of torture, you can smash his foot and he'd still rather smile at you than frown and let you think you've beaten him. Even the people closest to him whom he's worked with for a long time are people that he would consider associates, partners or allies... not friends. Even despite this distinction, there were a few he trusted-- Oda most of all. And considering his skewed sense of relationships and faith, to have his trust is a special thing. For those he trusts he is willing to put himself in harm's way to keep them safe. If you've earned his trust then he will do whatever is in his power to help you.

He is very aware of his limits on multiple levels. Which is why his connections have become so important. Between his failing kidneys and his prosthetic arm, the life he's lived since coming to Japan has caught up to him. But he can still hold his own in a fight if he has to. He has a great deal of determination and inner strength on top of his experience. Everything else more... personal, has been pushed behind some heavy walls for a long time. Most of the people who know parts of his story do so because they lived through them with him. What they don't know he wouldn't tell if not for a reason. Even someone like Kiryu who was working so hard to help him get the Empty Lot didn't know it's significance until circumstances that weren't meant to pass led to someone else telling him. And while Tachibana said he intended to say something eventually, it was clear that doing so was something that troubled him greatly. And the reason becomes evident when he does have to have that conversation.

It reveals that behind the wall of strength he's built up, there are a lot of cracks. When he realized everything his sister had gone through trying to find him he thought at first it was better if he never told her. Behind his self-assurance and brash confidence is someone who feels unworthy of the girl who came to Kamurocho looking for him despite the risk she put herself in. The things he's done to achieve the power he has now were immoral and shady and while he is not proud of it, he lives with it every day. Yet much as he weighs himself down with his doubts, a part of him does still long for the happiness he might have if he could see her again. When he does finally talk about it he bares his soul in a way he's never done before. He doesn't just leave it at what's necessary but instead it all comes rushing out like a tidal wave of pent up emotion. No doubt he's hurt himself time and time again by isolating his feelings, but feeling even more so that he didn't have anyone he could trust with his raw, true emotions.

Yet instead he made the choice to put his unwavering faith in Kiryu and Kiryu alone and turned himself in knowing his best move was to use his life to ensure Kiryu would survive. Despite knowing the man only a short time, he'd wanted to meet him for a long time and in truth-- warmed up to him in a way that he hadn't with anyone else, even those he had a much longer history with; in the end he willing to protect him with his life above all others, knowing that he could in turn protect Makoto with his-- something very significant for someone like him. If he could have said that he had made a true friend, Kiryu would have been that person. And that's why even now Kiryu is probably the only person with whom he's shared such a deep, dark part of his soul with. After all-- he was entrusting his unfinished business; the welfare of his beloved sister and the last family he had in this world to him with the notion that he would keep her safe from all the forces that were out to use her and ultimately kill her. But then he'd also been willing to pay a million yen earlier to try and ensure Kiryu's safety. He'd always showed in different ways that he thought Kiryu was special and important to him and his goals. But things like that don't always show immediately with him but rather develop over time.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Despite physical limitations in several areas, Tetsu still shows significant physical prowess. His poor health is not so bad that he cannot fight. We see him assist Oda and Kiryu in taking on a hoard of 50+ Tojo Clan members-- all trained, vicious yakuza. His joint move with Kiryu even involves him doing a leaping spinning kick over Kiryu. This is not an ideal situation for him anymore with his health, but he's more than capable of fighting back if the situation requires it. He has a significant amount of experience fighting from before his injuries and health issues and because of that history, with the exception of the arm he lost in fighting and his failing kidneys, he is both strong and even more than that-- agile. Before his injury he was the leader of his gang and significantly stronger than the other men. Enough so that even one of the strongest claimed to immediately know that his place was beneath this man.

That said, these days, his fighting style does rely heavily on his legs considering his prosthetic arm is no good for fighting and the left hand is not the best in a fight by itself; though useable. If he had to rely on his arm, he would, but not unless the situation called for it. He also makes use of simple weapons as well-- a cane or other blunt object that doesn't require as much control or even items that others drop or are present at the location. He's pretty clever that way. Carrying weapons around isn't as practical anyway and could lead to trouble.

However, his most prominent and useful skills and what you see most of now lie in the areas of business, networking, and negotiations. More often than not his approach is aggressive. But he is no fool. He avoids battles he cannot win. But if he sees a weak point in his opponent, he will aim for it relentlessly to get what he wants. Whether it's money or force, years of experience has made him good at determining what kind of pressure he needs to put on others to get results. Likewise that kind of thinking has earned him an ironclad network of associates who's loyalty is built not on friendship but the idea that cooperation will be mutually beneficial.

And while he can drive (he has a license, according to him) when it is necessary-- the skill is better described as something you'd see in a James Bond movie. The car will suffer and honestly, so does his health. But he knows how to race in and out in a pinch so in a sense, it still counts as a skill that's saved lives.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Tachibana Tetsu
AU AGE: 25
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Tachibana’s prosthetic hand (right) will be replaced with a perfectly normal, good hand. He also normally has a bat tattoo on his left arm-- a symbol of the gang he joined at one point which isn't there in the AU. It is also worth noting that due to the fact he would have had proper access to health benefits, proper citizenship and a healthier lifestyle, his kidneys have not failed him.

AU HISTORY: Born in Japan during part of the two years his father spent there working on a large and important real estate project, his father was Chinese and his mother was Japanese. At the end of the project he returned to China with his father and mother. A little over three years after they came back to China, his little sister Xiao Qiao was born. Even so, his mother had a difficult time adapting and relied heavily on her children for company and support. It was only natural that he spent more time with his mother and sister, as his father was a busy man who worked hard for their family and wasn't always able to be around as much as he liked. But that's why his father worked hard to make sure the kids and their mother could live comfortably without her having to consider working; and could instead focus her time on the household affairs and her children-- which was honestly the way she wanted it since having her first child.

Tetsu had little trouble learning not only Chinese but Japanese as well as he got older; and took pride in learning about both of his parent's home countries and cultures. From an early age it was clear that he was clever and intelligent and quickly became the top students in his classes. When he was younger he took part in clubs-- painting and folk music, although his skills with both were only ever average at best. As he got older he instead took up Chinese chess and otherwise focused on his studies. What time he didn't spend focusing on school or studies he spent with his family. He would pick up stories to tell his younger sister and helped his mother with things like cooking.

Inspired by his father, who was highly intelligent and hard-working, Tetsu often had his head buried in books about heavy subjects and placed learning above social activities outside of school. Some would certainly view it as growing up faster than necessary, but for him it was a matter of pride and brought him great happiness. Though he did not have much in the way of close friends in school, he was liked well enough by his peers for his kind and fair attitude. That is not to say however that he wasn’t very aware of his fellow classmates from an academic viewpoint. And he did spent time helping some of them that struggled in different areas.

But rather than follow directly in his father’s footsteps, Tetsu took all the topics he’d absorbed on and made use of them in the legal field. Although finishing school took him far away from his family, as he transferred to Recolle to finish high school and law school-- he kept in touch with them regularly and still made time to visit whenever classes took breaks. Focusing primarily on business, criminal and real estate areas in law school, he graduated in the top 10 in his class. Of course this once again came at the cost of certain social experience and this contributed yet again to his lack of a network of close friends prior to his graduation. But during this time he also studied English, because of it's popularity and common use in multiple parts of the world.

At this point he’s still very new as a lawyer. However; starting with law school he proved that his business networking was on a level few others possessed. When it comes to business, he’s charismatic and polite; knowing how to negotiate and articulate himself well among even those that have far more experience and status than he does. Some already speculate that he will be someone to really watch out for in the near future. That reputation however comes with a few bad habits-- primarily, the amount of focus he puts on his work. There are times when he's needed people around him to tell him that he needs to take a little break or remind him to eat something.

Since becoming a lawyer, he's founded a few business relationships and friendships with fellow lawyers including the ADAs Cumore and Matthew. His firm also sees it's fair share of interns, including Lelouch who interned with one of the lawyers in his office a while back and Akira Turner and Ava, who are presently working with him; Akira as a business lawyer hopeful and Ava as a paralegal and secretary, working on a Court Reporting major.

As a senior and mentor he seeks to offer all of them the full extent of his expertise and help them reach their full potential. Those who intern with him, he takes great responsibility for and looks after them rather closely. Ava in particular, who he's noticed has a habit of trying to be the hero around town and is only two years younger than his sister, he feels inclined to keep a close eye on. Akira on the other hand he finds to be incredibly competent and has a feeling he has untapped potential yet to be directed properly.

His work has also introduced him to some others in passing. In taking care of one particular real estate matter he met junior employee Kiryu Kazuma. It was short meeting, however, he has high expectations for his future. It's just a feeling, though, really. After all-- all he really did was offer him water. Nonetheless it was enough to make him remember the company and in turn he's referred clients to them a few times.

Off the clock he can most commonly be found at various bars including one he's become a regular at. The owner Olivia is a friend he can rely on to talk about whatever's happening; good and bad. She takes good care of him including making him special drinks and keeping things from back home for him. Certainly if she was ever in any need of advice or help she'd have it without question.

In his free time he still enjoys playing games-- typically strategic ones like chess, checkers, or mahjong-- he does also occasionally enjoy some more low-key entertainment: things like movies or music. In fact, there's often music playing softly in his office although more often than not it's classical type pieces. But outside of the office he does enjoy a lot of more recent stuff from popular bands. But it more commonly centers around Japanese and Chinese music.

AU PERSONALITY: Growing up in a setting where he was accepted meant having a very different view on life to carry with him. He was never shunned or attacked and the fear that he had to live so much of his early life in was simply not a factor for him in this life. Because of that his view is generally a much more positive one. Tetsu has more faith in humanity as a whole. While that doubt and skepticism do still exist on some level, he hasn't built up nearly as many walls and what does remain of those traits is instead a result of his experience working in law enforcement.

Which means he will be willing to let people in on some of his feelings. He still has a bit of that desire to be self-sufficient and be strong, but he's not exactly against the idea of other people helping him so much. Where in canon he internalized his feelings even regarding some very intense subjects; here he's grown up knowing there are people he can lean on, who won't consider him weak for needing others. So when it's bad he knows it's acceptable to talk to others, or even to cry.

In general, rather than using and manipulating others, he is happy to trust and help them. Instead-- his calculating nature and tactics is directed towards business. While he still maintains his aggressive business style-- it is not fashioned out of any sort of ulterior motive or hidden agenda. He can genuinely look for solutions that will give everyone what they want; saving those harsher battles for opponents that would genuinely seek to make his clients suffer or put them in unfavorable positions. What remains though is that despite trusting and liking people, he's still rather closed up about his personal problems. Not because they're dark or troubled now, but because he simply doesn't want his issues weighing others down. He doesn't want to cause the people he likes trouble. That's why he's more prone to putting on a smile and pushing through it than pursuing his worries. But unlike his previous self, he's not particularly good at lying about issues. That's a skill he's never had a reason or a need to develop in his current life. So when pressed, it's likely that someone will notice something is a little off.

Before, his climb to the top was motivated by his desire to amass power so he wouldn't need to continue to live in fear. In this version of himself, his desire to network and gain power is fueled by his personal goal to help others who can't help themselves. He still feels that same desire to create a large web of connections, but rather than for himself-- he uses it for others. Because on all aspects he's content with his own place in life. His family is safe and happy, he has his health and has had a great many opportunities... in his eyes his life has been nothing but fulfilling.

That has also allowed him to live without having to resort to crime and violence. Whereas his life choices before were made out of a mixture of fear and desperation to achieve a better life; in this world he has not had to do that. He had the support of both his mother and his father as well as his sister. And despite moving away for school, he has been able to keep those strong bonds through e-mails and phone calls. That strong support system is everything to him, even from a distance. Even in battling injustice through the law and court systems, he has not experienced the same feeling of helplessness that would make him feel like he needs to be taking drastic steps. He feels that with the right effort and enough power, he can obtain the ability to help others if he just works hard enough. It is equal parts naive, due in part to the shorter amount of time he's spent as a full-fledged attorney, and reckless ambition; the latter which is not so different from his canon self.

In some respects he's slightly less of a risk taker. While he still believes that business ventures themselves are all risks; there are things he will and won't risk. Unlike his former self, he wouldn't so easily do anything that would risk his connections with others. He would certainly first make every effort to seek peaceful, positive results without the conflict. In truth, he'd prefer avoiding conflict at all if it's possible-- even if that means sucking up a little to those who don't entirely deserve it, so to speak.

He's most certainly become the type who might skip a meal here or there or otherwise eat things that are easy to get rather than necessarily healthy for him now, whereas in canon we see him eat what could best be described as posh, five star restaurant food-- a habit that likely grew out of his ability to show power and wealth. Now, he may eat those kinds of things occasionally but it's more likely to arise as a business-type meal setting rather than his preferences in everyday life. At home he maintains a healthy diet but unless he's having company, likes keeping it simple. Out and about and in the office, however, his habits are a little less controlled and shift based on time and availability.

There's also a far more casual side to him that you wouldn't normally see in canon. While he has ambitions now, they don't make up as much of his core character and thoughts here. There are times when he can step away from his phone/beeper/laptop/office and do something just for himself. Unlike canon he can just go see a movie if he has time or do karaoke. Where in canon he was required to live in the shadow for many reasons-- including his citizenship as well as the shady work he was involved in-- that doesn't exist here. He's always had that freedom.

Now while you'll still see him dressed most often in various suits-- typically black or dark gray-- there are occasions he gets to dress casual, unlike canon where he always felt the need to show his power and status through his attire. If he's going out with friends, no work involved rare as it is he's not going to draw attention to himself by wearing his usual snazzy attire. But he still does try to look sharp in his own way. He'll wear clean jeans without holes in them, typically a darker color, or slacks. His shirts vary from cozy sweaters to plain colored button down shirts with either no or a simple pattern such as stripes, diamonds or spots. If he's looking to wear colors this is where you'll usually find it and most commonly in purples, blues, reds or oranges.
